Quip is cloud-based word processing software that allows you to create and manage documents, organize to-do lists, take notes and work collaboratively in real-time on your desktop computer, mobile phone or tablet. It does not matter in which device you left off using; your files will get automatically synchronized in all of them. One of the greatest things about Quip is that you can feel free to make the most of its tools even if you are offline: the next time you come back online all your documents will get updated.
Create documents, organize to-do lists, take notes and work collaboratively in real-time on your computer, mobile phone or tablet
Quip combines documents with messages in a chat-like thread of updates in order to provide a smoother and more visual workflow. The entire history of document modifications will be displayed together, and not through separated attachments. Quip’s home screen looks like an inbox, in which you can see the documents shared with you, latest edits and messages.
Some users say this text processor is a perfect mix among Microsoft Word, Google Drive, instant messaging utilities and Twitter’s dialogues. However, Quip even goes a step further by adding Notifications that inform you when a document is opened, or the Read Receipts to check who has viewed it just like in Facebook or WhatsApp. Moreover, the Quip experience can be seamlessly integrated with third-party keyboards such as SwiftKey. Nevertheless, something users miss is the ability to choose from amongst different font styles or to export as DOC, a feature that's not available yet.
How to use this utility
Getting started in Quip is really easy. Once you are done with the download and setup, you will need to log in using just your email credentials. You will be taken to Quip’s homepage, in which you will find files on the right and a chat box in a pane located on the left. The edits made in documents will appear along with IMs. Do not worry as they are clearly differentiable. Similarly, red will represent the deleted text while red means additions.
The edition tools you will allow you change font size or create an interactive checklist, amongst other things. Attaching media (image, link, chart or a person’s mention) to a document is as simple as clicking “@” or the paperclip icon. To share documents with people you just need to enter their name, email address or text message. Everyone will be able to read it through the link but provided, but collaboration is not possible unless they have a Quip account.
