Dying Light is a survival horror videogame developed by Techland. It is available for PlayStation 3, PS4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. This title deals with a zombie apocalypse, which is a bit of an overdone theme for games nowadays. We have already seen this a million times, always with slight variations to justify new titles such as mind controlling funguses that infect mankind, radiation, regular zombie viruses… The zombie gold mine doesn’t seem to have a end anytime soon.
Overall, the game looks like a mix between Mirror’s Edge and a next-generation Dead Island. It is played from a first-person perspective and melée weapons and close combat techniques are important. However, Dying Light offers enough good things to stand out from other zombie titles. Graphics are stunning, with detailed scenarios, realistic lighting effects and dozens of zombies onscreen that don’t make the game drop frames at all.
Dying Light goes a little further using common elements seen in other titles of the genre
The main character is far more agile than the regular apocalypse survivor. You can climb up walls and obstacles effortlessly, which is the best way to stay safe. You can also use your free running skills to jump over zombies (which is pretty spectacular) or deliver powerful kicks to take those rotten monsters down. You are free to face zombies if you want to, in fact you can easily kill one or two with your bare hands. However, this is not Dead Rising; if you spot an incoming horde, you'd better run for your life.
Good Night Good Luck
Dying Light goes a little further using common elements seen in other titles of the genre, but also includes new features, like the previously mentioned parkour skills. There is also one feature that makes things more challenging: zombies turn into violent killing machines when the sun goes down. I know this is not too innovative, as we already found this feature in Dead Rising 3, but honestly, I didn’t even notice any major change in zombies’ behavior except for the red bright eyes.
In Dying Light, zombies change dramatically: during the day you can dodge them, pass through them without being harmed and outrange them by climbing walls. Well, you can forget about these things after dusk. Zombie rage becomes stronger, faster and even more unpredictable. If you face them, they fight back, if you flee to higher ground, they will climb up after you. The only thing you can do to stay alive is run.
